Inspiration to make any house a HOME

One Room Challenge Week 1: Planning

October 1, 2021

Home Gym

For the Fall 2021 One Room Challenge, I’ll be tackling our home gym. This wasn’t my original plan, but when I put it to a vote in my Instagram stories, my son posted an impassioned plea for the home gym, stating that his “athletic and muscle building future” was at stake. How could I say no after that?!

Currently, our home gym is a storage room in our basement and consists mostly of cardio equipment with some dumbbells. It has worked well for me for years, but now that my teenage son is lifting, we need to add some more strength training equipment. I also think that a nice, organized space is more motivating, so maybe I can get more out of the time I spend in there.

The space is currently unfinished. It’s got a couple of framed walls and our poured concrete basement walls are exposed. So, it’s pretty much a blank slate!

The Plan

– Paint exposed ceiling

– Drywall the framed walls

– Faux brick panels over two of the poured concrete walls

– Paint other concrete walls with a fun pattern

– Rubber flooring throughout

– Additional gym equipment

– Organization, mirrors, decor, and more!

This project will include many firsts, but that’s what keeps things exciting for me. Plus, my son will be helping after school and on weekends, so I’m excited for that time with him.

For a walkthrough of the before, be sure to check out my Instagram stories (I’ll save a highlight, too). Thanks for following along as I turn this storage room into a great home gym!

Basement Kitchen Build – Installing Cabinets and a Custom Island

August 30, 2021

During our home build, we originally planned to have this basement kitchen area finished. But, decision fatigue is real and this was an area we knew we could put on the back burner and finish later. “Later” ended up being only a few months because, it turns out, I don’t like things unfinished! Not a surprise to those who know me. So, I made a plan and got to work!

Choosing Cabinets

Once I admitted that the idea of building all of the cabinets myself felt overwhelming, my husband and I decided to buy unfinished, pre-made cabinets. After comparing the options at multiple big box stores, we decided on Lowe’s cabinets for this project. These cabinets come in a variety of sizes, so I measured the space and determined what sizes I needed. My space did require some filler pieces, which you can make yourself or buy.

Custom Owner’s Closet

This custom master closet was my largest project to date, in terms of work and reward! While I do have some experience in closet design, I had never built anything this large. Completing this project allowed me to finally unpack wardrobe boxes and settle into our master suite.

Thinking of tackling your own closet project? Keep reading to learn more about the process.

The first step is to design a plan that works for you and your space! Some things to consider:

  • Do you prefer open or closed storage – open shelving or behind cabinet doors/drawers?
  • Do you need more hanging space or shelving space?
  • Do you need long hang space for dresses?
  • Do you long hang jeans or pants?
  • How much shoe shelving do you need?
